A good mixture of six short stories from around the west Bengal. A good enough to fill up the fist of your movie love.
I have always been a fan of anthology movies and I had it in my “to be watched list” for a long. But after watching the movie, I wondered why I kept this gem waiting away from my eyes.
All the six segments are beautifully captured and presented, all by six different directors.
Review:
Segment-1: Janmodin (Birthday)
This is the story of a wife and her care for her husband. With her single sacrifice, she saves her husband from a dual trouble. Paying the missed EMI within 24 hours to bank for flat on loan and arranging a new escort at last moment to his wealthy boss seems never easy for Rajatava. But his wife makes it possible with her sacrifices by being the escort for his boss and in turn getting the money for this, without the knowledge of Rajatava.
However, I would name this segment “khusboo”, as it depicts the fragrance of love and care of a wife for her husband. It is also why because, in the last scene the perfume bottle is shown, the perfume which is used by Srilekha while she is going as an escort and her husband has a little doubt from the smell of perfume. This way she knowingly indicates her husband about her sacrifice.
Segment-2: Pakshiraj:
This is the story of a small tea stall owner Arunima, who has dreams of becoming rich and live a life like a queen. She saves her all small earning day by day to live upto the dream, however her dreams are shattered as her male friend steals her money. Arunima kills him with a brick and police arrests Arunima.
Segment-3: Tapan Babu:
A family doctor to a wealthy woman, Supriya Devi, has extra marital affairs with her maid. One day Supriya Devi shows the photo album of her young age, where doctor sees a costly neckless in a photo. Supriya devi shows the actual neckless worth of 40Lacks to doctor from her wardrobe. The doctor manages to steal the photo from the album and goes to a jewellery shop and asks to make same design neckless of duplicate, planning to replace it with original neckless.
Doctor finds a chance a day when no one is around at Supriya’s House. He overdoses Supriya and replaces the neckless.
After the death of Supriya, Doctor is now a rich man as he has costly neckless. The story till this point is well in control of doctor, however it turns upside down when the maid reveals that she knows how doctor overdosed Supriya and starts blackmailing him.
Segment-4: Raghun Babu’s Story:
This is the story of man, popularly known as Raghun Babu in his locality due to his anger and rough nature towards people. One day he beats his wife in front of his son. Seeing this his son gets angry and beats his father (Raghun Babu) with cricket bat, injuring him on head. At last scene, the son is shown getting angry on old uncle, depicting one more Raghun Babu in making.
Segment-5: And Then Love
This is the story showing the how the ego brings a person down one fine day. Rupa and Kunal are husband and wife working in film industry. Rupa is more famous than Kunal and so her ego is at top. She insults her husband every now and then. But one a fine day she meets with an accident and gets on wheelchair, losing her work and also her husband as Kunal gets intimate with the maid which he kept for Rupa’s care.
Segment-6: Progress Report:
Ritu and Payel are two sisters appearing in board exam. Payel is more aspired to score high than Ritu and gets more attention by her parents and tuition teacher. With this injustice Ritu is quite jealous of Payel. However, during the exam when power spectacles of Payel are broken Ritu is the only person who sacrifices her exam to get the spare spectacles from the home for Payel.
Good to notice in movie:
You can observe that Tea and Taxi are part of all the six segments.
In the segment, “Tapan Babu” you can also notice Maruti 800 model car used by story character and also in a scene in same segment, a big banner advertisement of Maruti 800 can be seen.
Do not miss this masterpiece from Bengali cinema.
